Frequently asked question

Q: Is Key Folder really free?

A: Yes, for personal use Key Folder is free. Key Folder does not have any time limitation, no nag screens, no ads, no functions disabled or limited and no tracking software; it is a full working application. For business use a license is required, visit the order page for more information.

Q: I have lost my password to my Key Folder user file, can you get it back?

A: No, the whole point with Key Folder is that no one can access your information without the password. There are no back doors in the program or secret logging of passwords so there is no way for us or anyone else to get back your password if you have lost it.

Q: I want to run Key Folder from a removable disk like a USB drive, is that possible?

A: Yes, that is possible. The only think you have to remember is that all machines you want to run Key Folder on must have Microsoft .NET framework installed. We recommend the following steps to install Key Folder on a removable disk:

Q: Does Key Folder write/need any information from the registry?

A: Yes and no. When you install Key Folder the installation system writes an entry in the registry so that uninstall know where the installation files are located.  Also if you have chosen the option launch on start-up an entry is entered in the registry. So you can run Key Folder without theses registry entries if you for example run Key Folder from a removable disk.

Q: How secure is Key Folder?

A: Very. All data is encrypted using Blowfish encryption with a 128 bit key generated from the user name and password entered by the user. Blowfish encryption is a strong, fast and free encryption algorithm designed by Bruce Schneier. Blowfish encryption has never been broken by a hacker.

Q: How is the encryption key generated?

The encryption key is generated by taking the user name and password entered by the user, mix in some random characters and then use MD5 (a one-way hash function) a given number of times to produce a string (digest) of characters that is used as a key. The same input string to the one-way hash function will always give the same digest but is impossible to derive the original string from the digest.
